Overview
- The slow-moving system is forecast to begin tracking south-west on Thursday evening, make landfall on the Cobourg Peninsula near Cape Don on Friday morning, move over Melville Island on Saturday, and pass north of Darwin later that day.
- Fina remains a category two cyclone, with the Bureau of Meteorology saying an upgrade to category three on Friday or Saturday is possible as it nears the coast.
- Destructive wind gusts are expected to reach up to 155 km/h between Cape Don and Warruwi from Friday, extending to the Tiwi Islands early Saturday and possibly to Darwin later on Saturday.
- The Bureau warns of a dangerous storm tide for coastal areas on the Tiwi Islands and between Cape Hotham and Maningrida during Friday and Saturday, with tides likely well above the normal high tide, damaging waves and coastal flooding.
- Flood watches are in place for multiple rivers across the Top End, NT Police have deployed extra officers to the Tiwi Islands, and residents are being urged to secure property and prepare as reports of rising water and cut roads emerge.
