Dartmouth Tent Encampment Death Ruled Homicide

Following the Geary Street encampment’s closure, Halifax police are searching for a woman linked to a December assault after medical examiners ruled the victim’s death a homicide.

  • The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service determined last week that 56-year-old Jeffrey Alexander Emmerson’s death on Boxing Day 2024 was a homicide.
  • Halifax Regional Police describe the suspect as a woman aged 20 to 25, about 4-feet-10 with shoulder-length dark hair, wearing a blue jacket and red sweatpants at the time of the assault.
  • Emmerson was attacked on December 22 and declined medical care before being found dead in his tent four days later, prompting the ongoing investigation.
  • On June 25, Halifax Regional Municipality officially closed the Geary Street tent site and assisted its last occupants in relocating to indoor shelter options.
  • The incident has renewed calls for expanded affordable housing and mental health services to support Halifax’s unhoused population.
