Dartmouth Sorority and Two Fraternity Members Charged in Student's Drowning Death

The charges follow the July death of 20-year-old Won Jang, who drowned after an off-campus party involving underage drinking.

  • Won Jang, a Dartmouth College student, drowned in the Connecticut River after attending an off-campus party hosted by the Alpha Phi sorority in July.
  • The Alpha Phi sorority has been charged with facilitating an underage alcohol house, while two members of the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity face charges for providing alcohol to minors.
  • Jang, whose blood alcohol content was 0.167 at the time of his death, reportedly could not swim and was left behind during a heavy rainstorm when others left the river.
  • Dartmouth College suspended both the Alpha Phi sorority and Beta Alpha Omega fraternity following the incident, and the suspensions remain in effect pending an internal investigation.
  • Dartmouth has implemented new safety measures, including increased patrols near the waterfront, improved lighting, and offering free swimming lessons to students.
