Krafton announces first global beta test for the mobile version of the popular dungeon crawler, following a successful Korean trial.

A beta test for the mobile adaptation of the popular dungeon exploration game, Dark and Darker, is set to launch in August 2024, according to the game's publisher. This announcement follows a successful initial beta in South Korea earlier this year, which attracted over 50,000 participants in just four days. The upcoming beta will expand access to players in the United States, Japan, and Turkey, marking a significant step in the game's development and outreach.

Dark and Darker, originally a PC game, has garnered attention for its unique blend of cooperative and competitive gameplay, where players navigate treacherous dungeons filled with monsters and loot, all while managing the ever-present threat of betrayal from fellow players. The mobile version aims to replicate this experience, albeit with adjustments to accommodate the mobile platform. Players will choose from five character classes—barbarian, ranger, cleric, rogue, and fighter—each familiar to fans of the original game.

The mobile version is being developed by Bluehole Studio and published by Krafton, a company known for its work on the popular battle royale game, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. While the mobile adaptation will feature a streamlined interface and some reduced capabilities compared to its PC counterpart, it promises to maintain the core gameplay elements that have captivated players. The game will also introduce new features, including a separate player-versus-environment mode and a Sidekick system, allowing players to bring NPC companions into dungeons.

Despite the excitement surrounding the mobile version, the PC game has faced its share of challenges. Following a tumultuous legal battle with a major gaming company over allegations of copyright infringement, Dark and Darker was temporarily removed from major platforms. However, it has since returned to Steam and is now available for free, albeit with some limitations that have drawn criticism from players. The free version serves more as a trial than a fully-fledged free-to-play experience, with additional content locked behind a paywall.

The upcoming beta test is expected to incorporate feedback from the initial South Korean test, which was praised for its dynamic gameplay and engaging mechanics. Players have expressed enthusiasm for the game's emphasis on trust and betrayal, where alliances can shift rapidly, adding a layer of psychological strategy to the dungeon-crawling experience. As players prepare for the beta, the anticipation builds for how well the mobile version will translate the intense, often treacherous atmosphere of the original game.

Krafton has not yet announced specific dates for the beta sign-ups, but they are expected to open soon as summer approaches. The company aims to ensure that the mobile version meets the expectations of its growing fanbase, who are eager to explore the dark and dangerous world of Dark and Darker on their smartphones. As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, the success of this mobile adaptation could signal a broader trend of popular PC games making the leap to mobile platforms, catering to an increasingly mobile-centric audience.
