Darjeeling Himalayan Railway’s New NDM-6 Loco Passes Final Trial

The Northeast Frontier Railway plans to induct the diesel-hydraulic unit into service before Durga Puja to boost reliability on the UNESCO-listed line.

Overview

  • On August 4, NFR completed the last downhill trial run of the NDM-6 locomotive from Darjeeling to Siliguri, hauling three coaches as part of safety and performance tests.
  • The latest downhill evaluation follows a successful uphill trial from Siliguri to Darjeeling conducted earlier this week.
  • The NDM-6 is tailored for narrow-gauge heritage routes, featuring modern safety systems and delivering enhanced performance and reliability in hill terrain.
  • Two additional NDM-6 units are under procurement and expected to enter service by year-end to expand the locomotive fleet on the DHR.
  • The project supports NFR’s effort to modernize the century-old line and preserve its heritage character.
