Darfur Cholera Surge Prompts Mass Vaccination as Sudan Deaths Top 3,000

WHO says access restrictions compounded by seasonal rains are impeding lifesaving care in Darfur.

Overview

  • WHO reports more than 113,600 cholera cases and over 3,000 deaths across all 18 states of Sudan, a 2.7% case fatality rate that exceeds emergency targets.
  • Darfur has logged 12,739 cases and 358 deaths in more than half of its localities, with WHO warning of an alarming rise in infections and fatalities.
  • A new campaign began Sunday to vaccinate roughly 1.86–1.9 million people across six priority Darfur localities, with an initial push targeting 406,000 in North Darfur.
  • WHO cites severely limited access, flooded roads and a shattered health system, noting case fatality rates have reached up to 11.8% in parts of West Darfur and at least 380 child deaths reported by UNICEF.
  • Separately in Pakistan, floods since late June have affected over 6 million people and displaced more than 2 million, with health experts warning of cholera risks as NDMA reports 1,000+ deaths and widespread damage.
