Overview

  • Five people were shot shortly before 1:30 a.m. Sunday on private property near Carver Drive and Cheyenne Drive in Danville when gunfire erupted between occupants of a Chrysler sedan and party attendees.
  • The front passenger of the sedan, 22-year-old Jay’Shaun Tiejae White of Hurt, Virginia, was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering a gunshot wound to the upper body.
  • Four other victims—a 19-year-old woman and three adult men—sustained gunshot injuries; three remain hospitalized and the woman was treated and released at SOVAH Health Danville.
  • Police arrested Juwan Montel Baker, a passenger in the sedan, and charged him with multiple counts including discharging a firearm from a moving vehicle, malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
  • According to the Gun Violence Archive, this year has seen at least 127 mass shootings nationwide involving four or more victims, underscoring a broader surge in weekend gun violence.
