The scene, which took two days to film, involved Brooks' character being mobbed, attacked, and arrested by a group of men after she defied a racist housewife.
Despite the physical toll, Brooks did not take a break from production and continued to work while recovering.
In the Broadway adaptation of 'The Color Purple', the attack on Sofia is implied and not physically played out, making the film version more physically challenging for Brooks.
Brooks credits her Juilliard training for helping her recover and feel like herself after filming the taxing scene.
