Overview

  • West Midlands Police have formally identified the victim as 16-year-old Daniel Drewitt and confirmed his death is not being treated as suspicious, as they liaise with the coroner and support his family.
  • Specialist units from West Midlands Fire Service, police, ambulance and Birmingham City Council scoured Powell’s Pool after Drewitt went missing at around 6pm on July 10, recovering his body at about 10pm.
  • Staff and pupils at Colmers School & Sixth Form College and members of Northfield Town FC described Drewitt as a confident, talented sportsman who was deeply loved by friends and teammates.
  • A GoFundMe campaign led by Helena Swallow has set a £4,000 target to cover Drewitt’s funeral costs, and mourners have left flowers and football shirts at the lakeside in tribute.
  • Residents and safety advocates, recalling past drownings including the 2001 death of Frazer Amiss, are urging Birmingham City Council to install lifeguards, clearer warnings and physical barriers to prevent future tragedies.
