Overview

  • The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that a waterspout formed off City Beach around 5:20 pm Wednesday and intensified into a tornado crossing the coastline.
  • The storm uprooted trees, peeled roofs off multimillion-dollar homes and caused flash flooding in City Beach and adjacent suburbs.
  • Emergency services received more than 100 calls and deployed about 150 volunteers overnight, and no injuries were reported.
  • Meteorological stations recorded up to 71 mm of rain and wind gusts exceeding 87 km/h from Rottnest Island through South Perth during the event.
  • Authorities say the tornado’s rapid, localized development left little scope for warnings, and the ongoing survey aims to map damage patterns and improve future forecasts.
