Dallas Woman Charged With Murder in PetSmart Parking-Lot Killing After Door-Etiquette Dispute

Video evidence together with a post-arrest admission supports the charge.

Overview

  • Cecilia Simpson, 41, was shot multiple times around 1 p.m. on Oct. 7 in the Wheatland Towne Crossing parking lot and later died at Methodist Central Hospital, authorities said.
  • Police say the confrontation began at a Five Below when Simpson became upset that Keona Zachyua Hampton, 22, did not say thank you, then continued inside a nearby PetSmart where employees asked them to leave.
  • In the lot, Hampton allegedly threw a bottle at Simpson’s vehicle before a fight ensued, then produced a black-and-silver handgun and fired three shots, according to the arrest affidavit.
  • Detectives obtained cellphone and surveillance video capturing parts of the dispute, identified Hampton leaving in a black Ford Five Hundred, and arrested her during a 7:45 p.m. traffic stop the same day.
  • Hampton waived her rights and told investigators she fought with Simpson and shot her to get Simpson away from her; she is held without bond as detectives seek additional information.
