Dallas Woman Charged in Deadly Shopping Center Shooting After Door-Etiquette Dispute

Police cite video evidence alongside the suspect’s statements as the case moves forward.

Overview

  • Cecilia Simpson, 41, was shot multiple times around 1 p.m. Tuesday outside a PetSmart at Wheatland Towne Crossing and later died at Methodist Central Hospital.
  • An arrest affidavit says the encounter began when Simpson held a door at Five Below and became upset that Keona Zachyua Hampton, 22, did not say “thank you,” leading to a verbal dispute.
  • The argument continued inside PetSmart and into the parking lot, where Hampton allegedly threw a drink bottle before a fight in which she drew a black-and-silver handgun and fired three shots.
  • Surveillance and cellphone video documented parts of the confrontation and showed the shooter leaving in a black 2005 Ford Five Hundred, which helped police identify Hampton and locate the vehicle.
  • Officers arrested Hampton around 7:45 p.m. after a traffic stop; she admitted to fighting and shooting in an interview, was booked into the Dallas County Jail on a murder charge with no bond listed, and police say the investigation remains active with tips requested by Detective T. Gross.
