Dallas Readies Tight Security for RNC Midterm Convention

Officials say the security plan is meant to protect visiting leaders while keeping costs off residents by shifting responsibilities to organizers.

Overview

  • The Republican National Committee will hold its first midterm convention at the American Airlines Center on Sept. 9–10 with President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance expected to appear.
  • The U.S. Secret Service is leading a large security posture that includes metal fencing, vehicle and pedestrian checkpoints, and a published list of prohibited items and strict bag-size rules.
  • City and federal authorities will close streets and create a secured perimeter from Sept. 7 through midnight on Sept. 11 and will enforce ID checks for people entering the zone.
  • A temporary no-fly zone will ban manned aircraft and drones, rideshare and many deliveries will be restricted, and the DART Victory Park station will be closed during the event.
  • Dallas estimates security costs at about $1.8–$2 million and officials say the RNC has agreed to help cover expenses as police coordinate with protest groups and businesses to reduce disruption.
