Dallas Love Field Plans $1 Billion Overhaul to Add Lounges and Expand Capacity

A federal 20-gate cap forces a capacity-focused redesign that airport leaders expect Southwest to finance heavily.

Overview

  • Major construction is scheduled to start in 2027 and run about six years while the airport remains open.
  • The plan replaces Parking Garage A with a new two-level headhouse linked by a bridge, moving ticketing and security upstairs and baggage claim below.
  • The concourse will be widened by roughly 50 feet to create more seating, concessions, restrooms and space for Love Field’s first lounges.
  • Because federal law limits the airport to 20 gates, growth will come from reconfiguration and efficiency; traffic rose from about 8.5 million in 2014 to 18 million in 2024 with planners targeting capacity for roughly 6 million more passengers.
  • Southwest controls 19 of 20 gates and operates about 97% of flights, is expected to cover most costs, and has signaled interest in lounge access, though no lounge operator is confirmed.
