The suit filed in Pennsylvania federal court claims a defective electrical switchboard designed by Hyundai allowed power losses that led to the March 2024 collision.

Overview

  • Grace Ocean Private and Synergy Marine PTE Ltd filed the lawsuit last week in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
  • The complaint asserts that insecure wiring connections in the switchboard caused the Dali to suffer four blackouts within 12 hours on March 25–26, 2024.
  • NTSB investigators determined that an interruption in the control circuit tied to the main breakers triggered the initial power failure aboard the vessel.
  • In the final outage the ship lost steering and struck a support column, collapsing 1.6 miles of the bridge and killing six roadwork crew members.
  • The new lawsuit adds to ongoing litigation that includes Baltimore’s negligence claims and a $102 million cleanup settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice.
