Dakota Johnson Blames Committee for Madame Web Flop

The actress has shrugged off the backlash to focus on her new film Materialists.

Overview

  • Johnson said many creative decisions on Madame Web were made by committee or by people “without a creative bone in their body,” leaving her to go along as the project changed course.
  • She maintained that the film’s failure “wasn’t my fault” and added she “doesn’t have a Band-Aid” over the experience while staying open to future franchise roles.
  • Madame Web grossed about $100.4 million worldwide against an $80 million production budget, earned an 11% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and won three Razzie Awards, including Worst Picture.
  • Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra blamed negative press coverage for “crucifying” the film and noted it later found an audience on Netflix.
  • Johnson is promoting the romantic comedy Materialists, in which she co-stars with Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal ahead of its June 13 release.
