Dakar Stage 2: Sanders Takes Bike Lead, Quintero Wins as Al-Attiyah Grabs Overall Advantage

Toyota's stage sweep sets up a tightly packed leaderboard heading into Tuesday's 422km Al Ula loop.

Overview

  • Defending motorbike champion Daniel Sanders won the second stage and moved into the overall lead by about 30 seconds over Edgar Canet, with Ricky Brabec third.
  • Opening the route, Canet had minor falls around the 100km mark, allowing Sanders to catch and the KTM teammates to finish one–two on the stage and in the standings.
  • Seth Quintero topped the car stage by 1 minute 42 seconds from Toyota teammate Henk Lategan, with Yazeed Al-Rajhi third as Toyota filled the top five.
  • Nasser Al-Attiyah now leads the car classification by seven seconds over Quintero, with Guillaume de Mévius, Lategan and Sébastien Loeb among a top seven split by less than three minutes.
  • British rider James Hillier retired with a fractured elbow and India’s Harith Noah did not start after a back injury, as the rally continues in Saudi Arabia with navigation expected to be decisive on Stage 3.
