The trial attributes the heart health improvements to the fruit’s rich polyphenol and carotenoid content.

Overview

  • University of California, Davis researchers had 24 postmenopausal women consume 330 g of fresh mango daily in a controlled two-week trial.
  • Supine systolic blood pressure fell by an average of 6.3 mmHg two hours after mango intake and mean arterial pressure decreased by 2.3 mmHg.
  • Fasting total cholesterol dropped by 12.9 mg/dL and LDL cholesterol declined by 12.6 mg/dL over the 14-day intervention.
  • In a six-participant subgroup, mango ingestion produced a smaller blood sugar spike and quicker insulin return to baseline compared with white bread.
  • The study was funded by an unrestricted grant from the National Mango Board and researchers call for longer trials to confirm sustained benefits.
