Overview

  • The crash occurred just after 1:35 p.m. Saturday on westbound I-195 near Exit 19 in Dartmouth after multiple 911 calls reported a single-vehicle wreck.
  • Victims were identified Sunday by the district attorney as 19-year-old Kevin Dos Santos Lopes of New Bedford and 18-year-old Amilton De Pina Semedo of Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
  • Both occupants were ejected from a 2006 Chevy Equinox and taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where they were pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
  • Officials said the collision was so severe that the SUV’s engine detached from the chassis, and video footage captured a crane lifting the wreckage back onto the roadway.
  • Massachusetts State Police and the Bristol County district attorney’s office are jointly probing the crash’s circumstances, which investigators do not consider suspicious.
