D66, VVD and CDA Opt for Three-Party Minority Cabinet

The plan leaves the prospective government dependent on opposition support to pass its agenda.

Overview

  • Rob Jetten announced the three parties will pursue a minority government following talks at De Zwaluwenberg in Hilversum.
  • Together they hold 66 of 150 seats, so passing laws will require negotiated backing from opposition parties in both chambers.
  • Jetten said he has informed several parliamentary leaders and invited them to discuss cooperation later this week.
  • The VVD had sought to include JA21 for a majority, a step Jetten rejected, and Dilan Yeşilgöz called that outcome disappointing.
  • An EenVandaag poll of 20,624 panel members found most D66, VVD and CDA voters accept this setup and want housing, immigration, healthcare and defence prioritized, while CDA leader Henri Bontenbal said it calls for a different political culture with equal treatment of the opposition.
