D66 Edges PVV in Dutch Exit Polls, Positioning Rob Jetten to Lead Talks

Exit polls suggest lengthy coalition bargaining after mainstream parties ruled out working with Geert WildersPVV.

Overview

  • An IPSOS exit poll projects D66 at about 27 seats and PVV at roughly 25, with a one to two seat margin of error and no party near the 76-seat majority.
  • The exit poll, based on around 80,000 voters at 65 polling stations, is a strong indicator but official results are still pending.
  • Rob Jetten’s projected first-place finish would give him the first chance to assemble a coalition, and he could become the country’s youngest and first openly gay prime minister if he succeeds.
  • Frans Timmermans announced his resignation as GL/PvdA leader after the alliance was projected at 20 seats, trailing D66, PVV and the VVD.
  • The snap vote followed PVV’s June withdrawal from government, with migration, a severe housing shortage and rising healthcare costs dominating the campaign.
