D66 Edges Ahead in Dutch Election Projections as Rob Jetten Emerges as Prime Minister Front-Runner

Coalition bargaining will determine whether Jetten can govern.

Overview

  • ANP projects D66 leading PVV by about 15,155 votes with one district outstanding and overseas postal ballots still being counted in The Hague, with final figures not expected before Monday night.
  • With a projected 26 of 150 seats, D66 must reach 76 for a majority, with potential partners including VVD (22), CDA (18) and the GreenLeft–Labour alliance (20).
  • Parliament is set to meet Tuesday to appoint a scout to survey which parties are willing to negotiate, opening a formation process that can take months.
  • Interim prime minister Dick Schoof said he expects to remain in office through Christmas while talks proceed.
  • Geert Wilders acknowledged the projected loss, and Jetten, 38, celebrated a historic result for D66 and could become the Netherlands’ youngest and first openly gay prime minister if he secures a coalition.
