Czech Republic Mourns Victims of University Mass Shooting

24-year-old student, who legally owned multiple firearms, killed 14 and injured 25 before committing suicide.

  • The Czech Republic observed a national day of mourning on December 23 for the victims of a mass shooting at Charles University in Prague, which left 14 people dead and 25 others wounded.
  • The shooter, a 24-year-old student, killed himself on the balcony of the university building as police closed in. He had no criminal record and investigators found no link to any extremist ideology or groups.
  • The police believe the shooter also killed his father earlier in the day and a man and his baby in Prague last week.
  • The shooter legally owned 12 weapons, including a semiautomatic rifle, a shotgun, and pistols along with silencers, and arrived at the university with a suitcase full of ammunition.
  • Following the attack, the national police increased security around public buildings and schools across the country.
