Cygnus XL Reaches ISS After One-Day Delay From Software Safeguard

NASA cleared the enlarged freighter to continue its rendezvous after a conservative setting in its guidance software cut short two orbit-raising burns.

Overview

  • Canadarm2 captured Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus XL at 7:24 a.m. Eastern, with NASA astronaut Jonny Kim at the controls, before berthing to the Unity module.
  • Engine shutdowns during two non-sequential burns were traced to a conservative onboard safeguard, and teams executed a revised maneuver plan without further issues.
  • The uncrewed cargo ship delivered about 11,000 pounds (5,000 kg) of food, research equipment and station hardware for the seven-person crew.
  • This first flight of the stretched Cygnus variant boosts capacity by roughly 33% and launched Sept. 14 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral.
  • The spacecraft is slated to remain at the station until spring 2026 before departing for a routine, destructive reentry with station trash.
