Cyclone Threatens São Paulo GP as FIA Issues Level 4 Rain Alert for Saturday

Officials are preparing delay and fallback plans with the storm expected to peak before the 11 a.m. sprint.

Overview

  • Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology warns an extratropical cyclone could bring 30–60mm of rain per hour and wind gusts up to about 100 km/h across Greater São Paulo.
  • The FIA lists an 80% chance of heavy rain impacting Interlagos on Saturday morning with the worst conditions forecast from 6–9 a.m. local time and a roughly 40% risk for later qualifying.
  • State civil defence has activated weather alerts for flooding, fallen trees and power outages, and teams have been advised to keep garages closed outside on-track sessions.
  • A minimum three-hour gap between the sprint and qualifying and a 6:30 p.m. sunset leave only a two-to-three-hour delay window for the sprint before qualifying would likely shift to Sunday.
  • If qualifying cannot be held the race grid would be set by championship order, sprint points require at least two green-flag laps and more than half distance, and forecasts indicate easing by Saturday evening with a lower risk on Sunday.
