Cyclone Threat Recedes in Tamil Nadu as Heavy Rains Continue

Officials maintain flood controls and relief deployments following forecasters dialing back earlier cyclone projections.

Overview

  • The MET office withdrew the severe cyclonic storm warning, with red alerts retained for select districts such as Tiruvallur and Ranipet and broader orange and yellow advisories still in place.
  • Schools and colleges were shut in multiple districts, including partial closures in Chennai, as disaster teams, relief camps and community kitchens supported affected residents.
  • Chennai’s Water Resources Department began controlled releases from Chembarambakkam, Puzhal and Poondi and warned communities along the Adyar and Kosasthalaiyar rivers of rising levels.
  • The Mettur Dam again reached its full level with strong inflows prompting downstream discharge, while reservoirs across the state neared capacity and were managed through advance releases.
  • Heavy rain and waterlogging damaged paddy across the Cauvery delta and drenched grain at procurement centers, and fishermen were advised to stay off rough seas with squally winds forecast.
