Cyclone Koji Nears North Queensland Coast as Category 1, Flood Threat Rises

Forecasters say the main danger is torrential rain, with flash flooding possible from Ingham to Proserpine.

Overview

  • Koji was downgraded from category two overnight and is expected to weaken quickly after it moves inland.
  • The system is tracking south at about 18 km/h and was about 120 km north-east of Townsville in the latest advisory.
  • Landfall is expected around 8am AEST between Ayr and Mackay, with reports the center has begun crossing near Ayr and Bowen.
  • The Bureau of Meteorology cancelled Townsville’s cyclone warning, and gusts up to 120 km/h have been recorded in the Whitsunday Islands.
  • Major flood warnings cover the Herbert, Haughton, Pioneer, Georgina, Flinders and Cloncurry rivers, as extra SES, police and ambulance crews are staged in the Whitsundays and Ergon Energy urges people to avoid fallen powerlines.
