Cyclone Floods Swell Vamsadhara, Nagavali in North Coastal Andhra, Four Dead
Authorities have deployed disaster teams, announcing Rs 4 lakh for each bereaved family.
Overview
- Heavy rain from a cyclonic storm that crossed near Gopalpur, Odisha early Friday triggered riverine flooding that inundated low-lying areas in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and surrounding districts.
- Rains have begun to ease in parts of the region but rivers remain in spate, with a second flood warning active at Gotta Barrage and red alerts issued earlier for the three worst‑hit districts.
- Officials reported very high inflows: about 1.89 lakh cusecs at Gotta Barrage, 44,000 cusecs at Thotapalli and roughly 1.05 lakh cusecs entering the Vamsadhara from Odisha catchments.
- Four deaths were confirmed across the region, including a couple in a wall collapse in Srikakulam’s Mandasa, as the state mobilised NDRF, SDRF, police and fire services and kept control rooms running round the clock.
- Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu ordered restoration of roads and power and assessment of crop losses, while forecasters said the system would weaken to a low‑pressure area and flagged thunderstorm and squall risk over the next few days.
