Cyclone Ditwah to Near Tamil Nadu Coast on Sunday as IMD Issues Red and Orange Alerts

IMD urges coastal preparedness ahead of a close pass near northern Tamil Nadu on Sunday morning.

  • Cyclone Ditwah is forecast to track north to north‑northwest and pass roughly 25–50 km off the northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast by the morning of November 30, according to IMD bulletins.
  • IMD’s Chennai regional centre placed the storm on November 29 near the southwest Bay of Bengal, about 110 km southeast of Vedaranayam, 150 km southeast of Karaikal, 250 km south‑southeast of Puducherry and 350 km south of Chennai.
  • Red and orange alerts warn of heavy to very heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms across coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south coastal Andhra between November 29 and December 1.
  • Zee News reports that Sri Lanka previously suffered landslides, flooding and widespread damage from the same system, with at least 123 deaths reported.
  • A separate system, Cyclone Senyar, is intensifying over the Malacca Strait with winds near 70–80 km/h, and IMD cautions of heavy rain and gusts up to 100 km/h in parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and coastal Andhra, with fishermen advised to avoid specified sea areas.
