Cyclone Arnab Makes Landfall on Andhra–Yanam Coast and Kills Five

Remnants will drive heavy rain and flood risk across central and northern India, prolonging relief efforts and crop-loss assessments.

Overview

  • The storm made landfall on Wednesday, October 28, as a very severe cyclonic storm with sustained winds of about 125–135 km/h and gusts up to 150 km/h, and Andhra Pradesh reported five deaths linked to electrocution, collapsing walls and falling infrastructure.
  • Odisha moved tens of thousands of people to safety, with state officials saying 43,827 people were sheltered in 634 relief centres and more centres kept ready for further evacuations.
  • Andhra Pradesh suffered heavy infrastructure and agricultural damage, with around 15,000 electric poles uprooted, nearly 50,000 trees down in some districts, extensive standing-crop losses and roads and villages flooded.
  • The India Meteorological Department says Arnab is weakening and will become a depression and then a low pressure area, but its moisture is producing heavy to very heavy rain, flash-flood alerts and squally winds across Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with snow possible at high Himalayan elevations.
  • State and central response teams including NDRF and ODRAF are conducting rescue, power restoration and damage assessments while governments have sought central assistance and face multi-day recovery tasks because saturated soils raise the risk of prolonged flooding and greater crop losses.
