Cyclone Arnab Makes Landfall on Andhra Coast Near Yanam

Rising seas threaten low-lying communities as rescue teams mobilise to restore power and reach isolated residents.

Overview

  • The storm began making landfall early Wednesday with sustained winds of about 125–135 kmph and gusts up to 150 kmph near the Yanam–Kakinada corridor.
  • IMD warned of a 1.5–2.5 metre storm surge that could inundate low-lying coastal areas and brought extremely heavy rainfall to districts including Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli.
  • Authorities evacuated roughly 84,000–89,000 people into more than 2,000 cyclone shelters and have kept hourly bulletins and emergency control rooms active.
  • Transport and services were suspended as dozens of flights and scores of trains were cancelled, while heavy winds uprooted trees, snapped lines and caused widespread power outages.
  • NDRF, SDRF, the Navy, Coast Guard and thousands of utility crews have been deployed to conduct search, rescue and rapid power restoration after reports of at least one storm-related death and local damage.
