Cyclist Survives Seven-Meter Fall in Baltic Sea Cliff Collapse

Officials are reviewing added protections for a closed coastal path marked as impassable.

Overview

  • A 48-year-old fell from the steep coast between Nienhagen and Börgerende-Rethwisch after a section gave way around 11 a.m. Saturday.
  • Emergency crews including fire, police, ambulance and a rescue helicopter reached the scene and stabilized her.
  • She sustained only minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Bad Doberan.
  • Initial police statements indicated she had left the designated route and that the fall may have been partly self-inflicted.
  • Police taped off the collapse site, and Landkreis Rostock will examine further safeguards as authorities do not expect immediate additional collapses.
