Cyclist Survives Estimated Seven-Metre Fall as Baltic Sea Cliff Gives Way Near Nienhagen

Officials are reviewing added protections for the erosion-prone coast.

Overview

  • The 48-year-old fell late Saturday morning around 11:00 between Nienhagen and Börgerende-Rethwisch when a section of the cliff edge collapsed.
  • Ambulance crews, police, firefighters and a rescue helicopter responded, and she was stabilized and taken to Bad Doberan hospital with minor injuries.
  • Police provisionally taped off the collapse site, and Landkreis Rostock says it is assessing further protective measures and does not foresee immediate additional failures.
  • The foot-and-bike route along that stretch had already been closed with warning signs indicating it was not passable.
  • Police said initial findings indicate she had left the designated path, and coastal experts warn these cliffs are especially unstable in autumn and winter.
