Overview

  • On July 23 the tanker Capella collided with offshore supply vessel Coastal Legend in Cuxhaven harbor, tearing an 80-centimeter gash and releasing an estimated 6,000 to 12,000 liters of marine diesel.
  • THW crews have pumped out approximately 240 cubic meters of oil-water mixture since Wednesday and expect operations to finish by mid-afternoon today.
  • Containment booms and skimmers have been deployed around the basin, with booms scheduled to remain over the weekend before water samples are taken on Monday.
  • Cleanup was complicated by diesel pressed beneath the quay, requiring specialized skimmers and pumping equipment to extract the oil.
  • No injuries were reported in the collision and Elbe River shipping traffic has continued without disruption.
