Cutzamala Nears 93% Capacity as Mexico Weighs Boosting Deliveries to the Valley of Mexico

Officials are considering higher flows after exceptional rains lifted the system to its strongest level in years.

Overview

  • Conagua and OCAVM report the system at 92.5% storage, or about 724 million cubic meters as of October 5, with weekly gains continuing.
  • Forecasts presented by water authorities project 96% to 98% capacity by late November if seasonal rains persist.
  • Valle de Bravo holds roughly 365 Mm3 (92.7%), Villa Victoria about 174 Mm3 (94.1%) and El Bosque around 183 Mm3 (≈91%), the highest combined levels in seven years.
  • Current deliveries to the metro region are about 10.9 m3/s; technical meetings are reviewing a potential increase, while CDMX reports longer daily service in Iztapalapa and opened six Agua Bienestar treatment plants.
  • This rainy season set five rainfall records in under 90 days and overloaded urban drainage, and separate planned maintenance cuts are causing temporary outages in places such as Mexicali, San Luis and Greater Mendoza.
