Cutzamala Climbs to 70.7% After Rains as Morelia Concludes Preventive Cointzio Release

Officials are pairing higher storage with investments to reduce groundwater extraction.

Overview

  • Conagua reported the Sistema Cutzamala at 70.7% capacity, with Valle de Bravo at 78.8%, El Bosque at 61.7% and Villa Victoria at 63%.
  • The scheduled release from Presa de Cointzio in Morelia finished over the weekend at an authorized 5 m³/s, and authorities said it posed no risk to the public.
  • Ooapas said most of the Cointzio outflow was directed toward the Río Grande and Lake Cuitzeo, with only minor level increases expected.
  • After heavy rain, Morelia’s Río Grande ran at about 50% capacity and Río Chiquito at 30%, and crews began replacing 40 meters of collapsed drainage pipe on Boulevard García de León.
  • Michoacán’s governor outlined a plan to shut half of Morelia’s 140 wells, backed by 200 million pesos to complete the Atapaneo treatment plant and reallocate Cointzio water to the Santa María potable system.
