Cuttack Imposes 36-Hour Curfew, 24-Hour Internet Ban After Fresh Clashes Linked to Durga Immersion

Officials ordered a 36-hour curfew with a daylong internet blackout to curb rumours.

Overview

  • Police said fresh violence erupted on Sunday after a VHP motorcycle rally defied orders, with shops near Gourishankar Park set on fire and CCTV cameras damaged.
  • The curfew covers 13 police station areas for 36 hours from 10 pm Sunday, including Dargah Bazaar, Mangalabag, Cantonment, Purighat, Lal Bagh, and parts of the CDA region.
  • Internet and social media services are suspended from 7 pm Sunday to 7 pm Monday across the Cuttack Municipal Corporation, CDA area, and the 42 Mauza region under telecom suspension rules.
  • At least 25 people were reported injured in Sunday’s clashes, while six arrests have been made overall as police use CCTV, drone visuals, and eyewitness accounts to identify more suspects.
  • The unrest began during a Durga idol immersion when stone-pelting injured several people, including the Cuttack DCP, as leaders Mohan Charan Majhi and Naveen Patnaik urged calm and the VHP called a 12-hour bandh for Monday.
