Custom House Wharf Owners Plan Rebuild After Portland Waterfront Fire

Investigators say the destruction will likely keep the cause from ever being known.

Overview

  • Co-owner Steve Goodrich said about 20% of the wharf was damaged, with the Sea Bags factory store, Nanuq Kayaks, Maritime Antiques and a workshop space among the losses.
  • The Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association relief fund has raised about $18,000 so far and says donations will go to affected fishermen minus processing fees.
  • Fire officials reported the blaze began around 5:30 p.m., was controlled in roughly two hours during bitter cold that froze hydrants, and required fireboats to supply water.
  • Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and no civilian injuries were reported, with several boats damaged and one vessel sinking at the wharf.
  • The fire marshal has found no indication of foul play and notes the cause may remain undetermined, while owners begin planning with insurers, the city and contractors and say displaced tenants will be included.
