Cummins Says He’s Unlikely for Ashes Opener as Back Recovery Continues

Medical guidance requires roughly a month of bowling before a Test return.

Overview

  • After scans confirmed lumbar bone stress in September, the Australia captain has resumed running but remains a couple of weeks from bowling on turf.
  • Cummins says he needs about four weeks of net bowling to be ready to deliver a Test workload of around 20 overs in a day.
  • He has not bowled since the West Indies series in July, and coaches indicated a decision on Perth selection is due soon.
  • If he misses the opener, Steve Smith is expected to captain with Scott Boland likely joining the pace attack alongside Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
  • Cummins has not committed to the day-night second Test in Brisbane on December 4 and plans to travel with the squad while continuing rehabilitation.
