Cumbria Police Log 600+ Stops and 40 Arrests in December Drink- and Drug-Drive Crackdown

The December crackdown targets a seasonal rise in intoxicated driving following earlier gains under Operation Colossus.

Overview

  • Operation Limit is running throughout December to deter drink- and drug-driving as offences historically increase over the festive period.
  • After reports of erratic driving in Windermere, officers intercepted a black Mercedes at the M6 junction 36 slip road and arrested the disqualified driver who failed a roadside drugs wipe and had suspected Class A drugs hidden in his clothing.
  • A Workington woman was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and child neglect after rolling her car with three children inside, and she was found to be more than twice the legal alcohol limit.
  • A Carlisle operation at Todhills today resulted in a drug-driving arrest, a separate arrest for immigration offences, eight vehicle prohibitions or immobilisations, seven fixed penalties for overweight vehicles, and detections for mobile phone use, illegal tyres, and an insecure load with one seizure.
  • Police leaders say the effort builds on the 15‑week Operation Colossus that stopped 1,530 vehicles and made 22 arrests, and they urge the public to report suspected offenders online, via 101, to Crimestoppers anonymously, or by calling 999 in emergencies.
