Cumbria Flood Risk Persists as Warnings Fall to Three After Torrential Rain

More than 300mm fell in 42 hours in the Lake District, leaving rivers swollen across key catchments.

Overview

  • By Wednesday afternoon, three flood warnings remained for Keswick Campsite, the Rivers Cocker and Derwent at Cockermouth, and the River Crake Valley.
  • Seven flood alerts also stayed in effect, including North Morecambe Bay, the Brathay–Rothay–Winster catchments, the Cocker–Marron–Derwent system, and the Upper Derwent and Derwent Water.
  • The Met Office reported over 330mm of rain across parts of the Lake District in 42 hours, with 319mm recorded at Honister by Tuesday afternoon.
  • Authorities removed eight flood warnings in the past 24 hours as levels eased in some areas, but roads and rail were disrupted, including the closure of St Ninian’s Bridge in Carlisle.
  • Keswick Campsite saw the river reach 2.8m against a 1.8m property-flood threshold, and firefighters rescued two people from a vehicle in floodwater at Braystones.
