CTA to Close State/Lake ‘L’ Station Jan. 5 for Three-Year Demolition and Rebuild

Riders will shift to Washington/Wabash, Clark/Lake or the Red Line’s Lake stop as trains skip the Loop hub.

Overview

  • City officials set a Jan. 5, 2026 shutdown to raze and reconstruct the 1895 station, with reopening projected in 2029.
  • Brown, Green, Orange, Pink and Purple Express trains will bypass State/Lake for the entire construction period.
  • The Lake Red Line station remains open for subway service, with transfers directed to Washington/Wabash or Clark/Lake; CTA bus stops stay in place with possible temporary reroutes.
  • Preparatory lane closures on eastbound Lake Street begin Dec. 8 during off‑peak hours, followed by a local‑traffic restriction between Dearborn and Wabash starting Jan. 5.
  • The rebuild adds wider platforms, new elevators for full ADA accessibility, a glass canopy and improved lighting at one of CTA’s highest‑ridership stations.
