CTA State/Lake Loop Station Closes Monday for Three-Year Rebuild

Riders will use Clark/Lake or Washington/Wabash during a $444 million project with overnight demolition.

Overview

  • Trains on the Brown, Green, Orange, Pink and Purple lines will bypass State/Lake until work finishes around 2029.
  • The Red Line’s Lake subway station stays open, with accessible transfers available at nearby stations.
  • Lake Street is limited to local traffic between Dearborn and Wabash, while bus stops and sidewalks remain open.
  • Most demolition occurs overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. to curb daytime disruption.
  • The rebuild replaces nearly the entire 1895-era station with elevators for full ADA access, twice-as-wide platforms and a large glass canopy.
