CST Says Facebook Was Slow to Remove Posts Praising Bondi Massacre and ISIS

CST plans to seek an Ofcom investigation into Meta's handling of terrorist content.

Overview

  • Community Security Trust reported that Facebook hosted posts celebrating the 14 December Bondi Beach attack and praising Islamic State that were still live on 16 December.
  • Some of the accounts sharing the material were identified as UK-based and were reported to counter-terrorism police as an urgent matter.
  • Meta said it removed content for violating policies on dangerous organisations after being contacted by the Guardian and indicated some posts had already been taken down.
  • Ofcom reminded platforms of their legal duty to assess reported posts for illegality and remove them swiftly, while the Home Office condemned content promoting terrorism or violence.
  • Australian authorities said a homemade Islamic State flag was recovered from a vehicle used by suspects in the attack, which killed 15 people at a Hanukkah celebration.
