Overview

  • Matter 1.4.2 introduces Wi-Fi-only commissioning through Wi-Fi Unsynchronized Service Discovery, enabling device onboarding over Wi-Fi without requiring Bluetooth LE.
  • The release adds Vendor ID verification for cryptographic controller authentication, Certificate Revocation Lists to revoke compromised device certificates and Access Restriction Lists to limit router setting access.
  • It extends Quieter Reporting, mandates capacity minimums for Thread border routers (150 devices) and Wi-Fi access points (100 connections) and refines traffic management and Target Wake Time support to boost network efficiency and device battery life.
  • User-facing behaviors are standardized with certifiable Matter Scenes (including time-based actions), consistent endpoint unique IDs, automatic capability notifications and uniform robot vacuum command handling.
  • All improvements remain contingent on ecosystem adoption, requiring firmware updates from Matter Controllers and the eventual availability of Matter-certified routers before consumer-facing benefits emerge.
