Mexico Launches Plan Michoacán to ‘Seal’ the State With 12,000 Forces and a 57 Billion-Peso Push

Leaders pledged regular oversight to confront extortion following the assassination of Uruapan’s mayor.

Overview

  • The Defense Ministry activated Operation Paricutín with 10,506 Army, Air Force and National Guard personnel, plus 4,140 in border containment and 1,980 newly added federal forces to restrict criminal movement.
  • The Navy is deploying 1,781 marines with aircraft, drones, ships and special operations units concentrated in Lázaro Cárdenas, Aquila and Coahuayana for security and maritime interdiction.
  • The plan allocates more than 57,000 million pesos across 12 axes and 100+ actions, including credits and investments for farmers, expanded social programs, and major infrastructure, connectivity and electrification projects.
  • Authorities will intensify anti-extortion work by reinforcing the state police and prosecutor’s office, creating specialized investigation units, and assigning dedicated 089 line operators for Michoacán.
  • The federal cabinet will visit municipalities, meet avocado and lemon producers, provide monthly public updates with biweekly reviews, and the state government will contribute an additional 2,700 million pesos.
