Cruise Proposes $75,000 Settlement to End Probe into Pedestrian Accident

The General Motors' unit plans to enhance reporting to regulators following the incident where an autonomous vehicle dragged a pedestrian.

  • Cruise, General Motors' autonomous vehicle unit, has offered $75,000 to settle a California regulator's investigation into a pedestrian accident involving one of its self-driving cars.
  • The incident occurred in October when a pedestrian was hit by a human-operated vehicle and thrown into the path of an autonomous Cruise car, which dragged the individual 20 feet while attempting to pull over.
  • Following the incident, both California and the National High Traffic Safety Administration launched investigations into the incident, and California suspended Cruise's testing permits.
  • Cruise halted operations across the United States and recalled all of its 950 driverless vehicles for software updates. The company also terminated nine executives and 24% of its workforce in December.
  • As part of Cruise's settlement offer, it plans to provide the California Public Utilities Commission with enhanced reporting and has requested that the February 6 hearing be deferred.
