Cruise Continues Autonomous Vehicle Testing Abroad Amid U.S. Safety Concerns
Despite suspending operations in the U.S. due to safety concerns, Cruise continues to test its vehicles in Dubai and Japan under Level 2 autonomy.
- Cruise, General Motors' autonomous vehicle subsidiary, continues to test its vehicles on public roads in Dubai and Japan despite being deemed unsafe in the U.S.
- Cruise paused its autonomous vehicle operations in San Francisco in October following a directive from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), citing 'unreasonable risk' to public safety.
- The company is also pausing supervised and manual AV operations in the U.S. while it undergoes a full safety review.
- Cruise has been embroiled in safety concerns after one of its AVs got involved in an accident in early October, where a pedestrian was dragged by the vehicle.
- In Japan and Dubai, the vehicles are being tested in what is known as Level 2 autonomy, which requires a safety driver to be present at all times.
