CRRC to Furlough 161 Springfield Workers Starting March 16 After CBP Detains Train Parts

Federal forced-labor reviews have stalled car shells for the Red Line despite extensive supply-chain documentation submitted by CRRC.

Overview

  • The two-month furlough, disclosed in a WARN filing, is scheduled for March 16 through May 15 with health coverage continued and state rapid-response support arranged.
  • About 40% of the 406-employee Springfield plant will be idled as detained car shells and components have halted production.
  • CBP began holding shipments in May under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, and one detained load at the Port of Philadelphia was returned to China.
  • CRRC denies violations and says an 80-person task force traced up to eight supplier tiers, conducted more than 100 site visits, and submitted over 2,000 files on Jan. 7.
  • MBTA officials say they are coordinating with federal authorities and expect additional Red Line cars this winter, with 60 of 252 delivered so far.
