Crowdsourced Maps Show USO Hotspots Along U.S. Coasts, Reviving Security Warnings

Retired Navy voices press for all-domain monitoring following Enigma’s dataset highlighting thousands of water-linked reports.

Overview

  • Enigma’s public database, launched in late 2022, now visualizes thousands of Unidentified Submersible Object reports clustered near U.S. waterways.
  • As of August, more than 9,000 sightings were logged within 10 miles of shore, about 500 within 5 miles, and over 150 describe objects hovering over or entering the water.
  • California and Florida show the highest counts in the dataset, with 389 and 306 reports respectively, according to the published maps.
  • Retired Rear Adm. Tim Gallaudet warns that objects traversing the air–sea interface could have major implications and urges stronger all-domain awareness.
  • The Pentagon verified the 2019 USS Omaha recording as authentic, and AARO says it is investigating similar incidents but has released few public findings.
